‘Cultural Clearing’

From the Echo
If you’re interested in Mr Redmond’s ‘Cultural Clearing’ idea see the final paragraph.

Cathedral answers Phil’s culture call

Sep 26 2007 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

THE Metropolitan Cathedral today became the first major city organisation to join Phil Redmond’s “Cultural Clearing” drive.

The cathedral will offer its piazza and plateau as an outdoor art gallery for people to exhibit their work.

Culture guru Mr Redmond hailed the offer and said it would also act as a legacy project for Liverpool.

The news comes 24 hours before Liverpool Culture Company announces its highly-anticipated programme for Capital of Culture year.

Dozens of specially-commissioned arts projects and events are expected to be unveiled tomorrow.

But in addition to the major high-profile events, Mr Redmond – a deputy chairman of the Culture Board with the remit for delivering the artistic side of 2008 – is keen for everyone in Liverpool to be given the chance to get involved.

He said: “The cathedral has got its own programme of exhibitions already drawn up for next year.

“But when I put the idea to them, they immediately stepped forward.

“It’s going to put back into the city what was lost when the Bluecoat was closed – people could hang their paintings on the railings outside.

“This will now give us something more permanent to go way beyond 2009.

“I see Cultural Clearing as a legacy project in its own right. It will always be an opportunity for people with ideas to meet people who can offer support.”

Cultural Clearing aims to connect organisations in need of money or venues with those looking to give funds or offer space.

Mr Redmond said since details of the initiative were unveiled last week, organisers had been inundated with responses.

He said: “The ‘in box’ is starting to get swamped. We’ll take November to look at what has come in.”

Details of how people can access the cathedral’s piazza for exhibitions will be revealed at a later date.

TO submit an idea for Cultural Clearing, fill one side of A4 paper – or one page of a printed-out email – setting out:What is the idea? What happened previously? What does it contribute to Capital of Culture? What does it need?Mark it “for Cultural Clearing” and send it to: Culture Company, Millennium House, Victoria Street, Liverpool.
Deadline for submissions is end of October.
